High Five For Friday { birthday edition }

Here are 5 of my favorites from this past week...

{1} Today is my birthday! I love birthdays. Some friends took Curtis and I out to dinner last night. It was seriously yummy. This morning the boys let me sleep in a little bit, surprised me with a present, made me a smoothie (my favorite breakfast), and even did some laundry for me (Friday is always laundry day). Tonight, Curtis and I get to go out again to finally see The Avengers! We're comic movie nerds and proud of it.

{2} I actually made it to the gym 3 times this week! Usually I'm lucky if we get over there just once. I've recently come to love jogging and I feel so much better about myself and happier on the days that I get to run.

{3} Speaking of the gym...the pool opens this weekend and all I can think about is how I'm going to spend Monday sitting in the shallows of the pool, soaking up the sun with my babies.

{4} Last weekend, we went down to the beach with friends. I already showed some pictures...but that definitely made my week/month. I love the beach. I'm hoping to plan many more day trips this summer, all leading up to our week long family beach vaca.

{5} I love birthdays, but hate the idea of getting old. Today, I started thinking about the past year and things that I've accomplished. I thought about how I grew and birthed a little new human this past year and how he is already turning into such a sweet, loving, and smart kid. That's a pretty big accomplishment and I am now grateful that I could live one more year of life to have Owen join our family, and to see Ande grow into such a big kid. I guess that part of getting old isn't so bad!

a coral mirror

A few weeks ago, I decided that I was going to paint an accent wall in our living room. My thinking was that, if the wall was a contrasting color, then it wouldn't need any sort of decoration. I'm not so great at positioning pictures and other decorations on the walls. I really really badly wanted to paint the wall coral, which I actually talked about one day. Well, we didn't end up painting the wall. I still have a *slight* obsession with coral, but my thoughtful husband had to reign me in a little. Maybe in a different house, with different coloring, with different furniture, we might be able to paint a coral accent wall. But, for now, I settled with just a touch of coral on our previously black mirror that resides over the fireplace.

You can also catch a glance at my super simple Memoral Day/4th of July decorations. I mod podged a nautical fabric on that frame last year, spray painted some vases long ago, and tied that rag garland as a decoration for Ande's bicycle birthday party.

9 things for 9 months

(Pics from the "brown sugar incident")

I have now known my little (big) nugget, Owen, for longer than he was in my tummy.
(He has been 9 months for a couple weeks already, but just go along with it, ok?)
Here are 9 things about him for 9 months of life...

{1} Owen loves dogs. Like, really loves dogs. He loves pictures of dogs, stuffed animal dogs, real dogs. Anytime he encounters a dog, in any form, he kicks his legs, freaks out with joy, and says, "Daaaeeeee!"

{2} His first word was either "Daaaaeeee" (dog) or "Baaaa Baaa" (baby). I can't remember now. Oops. He loves babies almost as much as dogs. He stopped saying "baa baa" though, and now uses "Daa" for everything. Dad, dog, baby, Ande...

{3} Owen is a big boy. He is only 7 pounds shy of weighing as much as his 3 year old brother. At his appointment today, he was in the 99% for everything. He's big, but totally healthy in a good way. It's great because he can already share clothes with Ande (I'm always looking for a way to save!).

{4} He crawls like a champion (started at 7 months) and can usually be found following Ande, wherever he is.

{5} Ande is his favorite person. If I ever get Owen out of his crib by myself, I try to give him kisses, but he is too busy looking all around for Ande, like "where the heck is that guy?"

{6} Owen is always smiling and will laugh at almost anything you say. One day, in the car, I was talking to Ande and turned around to say, "Don't ya think?" to Ande. Owen busted out laughing. So now, if he ever needs a good laugh, all Ande and I have to say is, "Don't ya think?" (or, "don't ya fink?" as Ande would say). It cracks him up every time.

{7} Owen has some sweet moves. Any time he hears a beat, his body automatically starts gyrating. That is such a weird word, but it is the best one I could think of to describe it. When I put him to bed at night, I sing him a couple songs, and sometimes he will even start bopping his chest along with my singing. It's hilarious.

{8} His favorite book right now is this one that my parents got for him in London. It's called Shimmery Dinkies, Blue Truck. He loves it, and enthusiastically turns the pages so he can see the very last page, which is his favorite (a picture of a baby with a bottle, of course).

{9} This only happened once, but it is too hilarious not to mention. Late one night, he woke up crying because of teething or something, so I went in to get him wrapped up good and to pat him. After patting his back for a while, I slowed down to a stop and just rested my hand on his back. As soon as my hand stopped, he started clenching his butt muscles over and over again. Basically, he clenched his butt to tell me, "Don't stop patting!"

Owen is always doing funny, quarky, little things like that and they always keep us laughing and smiling. No matter how crazy and stressful things get around the house, he is always so laid back and happy. He puts up with a lot and we sure do love him for it!

Snapshots { sun and sand }

There's nothing like a good sunny day at the beach.
We drove down with some great friends, and had a wonderful time.
While there, it felt like we were on vacation, and it was definitely hard to leave!
There was a lot of digging, dumping, sand eating, running, and splashing.
Ande had such a great time, I don't think he sat still the entire day.
Now Curtis and I are nursing our sunburn and wishing we were back listening to the waves, and soaking up the sun.
With our first beach trip down, it feels like summer is finally here!

super hero craft week { super hero round-up }

Welcome to Super Hero Craft Week!
My son has recently become interested in super heroes, and I know with some of your boys, it is more of an obsession! I hope this week you will find some fun ideas and crafts to keep your super hero loving kids happy!

I was planning to finish up super hero craft week on Friday, but then life just happens.
It mostly has to do with 2 boys, 2 spoons, 1 container of brown sugar, all behind the pantry door.
I'm sure you can imagine.
This little (BIG) mess spurred me on into a spring cleaning frenzy on Friday and I just couldn't stop long enough to blog!

But, now here we are, the end of super hero craft week.
A big thank you to my two guest posters this week, Ilene and Telisa!
I thought I would finish up with a gathering of some more great super hero tutorials
that other bloggers have created!
I hope you find some inspiration for your own little super heroes!

super hero craft week guest post { super hero cape tutorial }

Welcome to Super Hero Craft Week!
My son has recently become interested in super heroes, and I know with some of your boys, it is more of an obsession! I hope this week you will find some fun ideas and crafts to keep your super hero loving kids happy!

Today, I'm glad to have Ilene, from Come On, Ilene! here to show us a fun cape tutorial! She has a fun blog, where I found out she has great taste (our blog designs are a big similar :) ) I think she loves bicycles even more than I do, as you can see from her latest post! Enjoy!

..................................

Hi! I'm Ilene and I blog over at Come On, Ilene! Thanks for having me here, Lindsay! I'm delighted to share my Reversible Superhero Cape Tutorial during Super Hero Week! I made this reversible superhero cape for my little friend Mikey. Mikey is one of my favorite little boys- so sweet, smiley, and easy going. He laughs at everything and his girlish high-pitched squeals and giggles capture my heart. If I have a little boy, I want my child to be just like him, he's just adorable. He loves the Disney movie Cars and when I babysit him, he often zooms all around the house whispering "Focus. Speed. I. Am. Speed," running around with his little clenched fists in front of him. He sits in his little carseat behind me while I drive, keeping himself entertained by repeating "I am lightning. Ka chow! Ready, set, go!" It's hilarious! He has an extra special place in my heart because I babysat his older sisters while his mom was at the hospital giving birth to him so I can't believe that he just turned 3 years old! It was fitting that he had a Cars-themed party. He was a superhero for Halloween last year, so I thought I would make him a cape for his birthday that combined both of his loves. What little toddler wouldn't love their very own superhero cape? I had a rough idea of how I was going to sew this cape in my head but I mostly made it up as I went along. All I had to go off of was this very precise pattern that I doodled: I started with this nice blue velvet fabric, which I folded in half and pinned in place. (If I had red fabric on hand, I would have done the Lightning McQueen side using red fabric just to make it more different) I was going to draw one half of the cape against the fold and cut out so that when I unfold it, both sides would be even: For the neck hole, I traced a 5.5" bowl, lining half of it against the fold: Then I drew out the basic pattern for half of the cape: Cut and unfold the cape so that it looks like this (I added the rough dimensions for a cape sized for a 3 year old): I used this piece as a pattern for the backside. I traced and cut out an identical piece so that I had two matching pieces, one for superman and other for lightning mcqueen. I drew a superman logo with an "m" for Mikey using photoshop about 8" wide and printed it out. It took a few tries to get the size of the logo just right. I placed the logo on the cape to get a good idea of what it would look like, made adjustments and reprinted: For the Lightning McQueen logo, I found one by googling and printed it out to the right size: I then cut out the logos from the paper and used them as patterns to trace on felt. I cut out the felt logos and placed on the cape (sorry for the dark picture, by this time, it was getting late into the evening): Then machine stitched the logos in place on each side: "95" for Lightning McQueen: To put the whole cape together, pin the two pieces right sides together and sew all around the edge, leaving a 5" opening to turn inside out. Turn the cape right side out and then top stitch all around the cape, sewing the 5" opening shut. (Sorry, no pictures of this because it was approaching 1am in the morning when I finished) I sewed velcro on both sides of the neck ties so that it would be easy for a 3 year old to put on and take off: I wish I got a picture of Mikey "vrooming" around the house with his cape on!! He looked super cute! And now he has an outfit to wear when his older sisters want to play dress up! He won't be stuck wearing one of their many princess dresses and tutus! After I made this reversible cape, I whipped up a couple NON-reversible superman capes for my cousin's two sons, which was even easier and faster! Check out the one-sided version by clicking on the image below: I also made a couple little capes for my college friend's two daughters! We went to Duke University and the mascot is a Blue Devil who wears a cape and horns, so I had to make a Duke version, too!! The possibilities are endless with these superhero capes!! Hope you try these out!! And please come visit me over at Come On, Ilene! for other fun ideas!!

super hero craft week { party ideas }

Welcome to Super Hero Craft Week!
My son has recently become interested in super heroes, and I know with some of your boys, it is more of an obsession! I hope this week you will find some fun ideas and crafts to keep your super hero loving kids happy!

Ande's little buddy had a super hero birthday party this past weekend, and it was great! It was the perfect start to this super hero craft week! She had set up some fun stations with different super hero activities and the boys loved it. They looked so cute decked out in their super hero capes!

If I had brought my camera to the party, I would have taken pictures of everything and documented all of the great ideas. Unfortunately, all I had was my phone, so one good group shot of the kids was all I got. So instead, I thought it would be fun to gather some super hero party ideas together that I found around the web.

Similar to the party Ande went to, this party had stations that the kids rotated through. I especially liked the decorate-your-own capes, and obstacle course stations!

This vintage pop art party is just fun to look at! I love the colors, the skyline food table, the color block jello, and the weight lifting gmae!

I had to plug yesterday's guest poster, Telisa, just one more time. Remember the super hero cupcake topper printables I mentioned yesterday? They are adorable!

Let's not forget the girls out there who love super heroes too! I really really love the photo's taken of this little girl all decked out in her super girl outfit! I also love the vintage-feel of her party. There are cute garlands on the table decor, a fun bingo game, and the invitation is my favorite part!

Have you hosted a super hero party lately? I'd love to hear about it!

Check back tomorrow for another guest post by Ilene from, Come On, Ilene! She will share a great tutorial for a reversible super hero cape! And, definitely go check out her blog and see if you see anything familiar!? Great minds think alike :)
